I went to pick Mantam from the day care. Tammu jumped in excitement and told her friend H, “H,H, see see. My mamma wearing new dress.” H just smiled. Tammu said “Nice no? This is my Mamma” and came to hug me and said “My Mamma. I lub you bug big much”.

Mannu: “Mamma, why don’t you wear Jeans daily? This dress is not nice.”
Me: “I can wear Jeans only on Friday dear. Today is Tuesday na?”
Mannu: “But I saw so many uncles and aunties wearing Jeans today.”
Me: “Mmm… Anyway, I need to buy a new Jeans pant. Tell Baba to get me one okay?”
Mannu: “You want a new one? Why don’t you wear Baba’s jeans? Kuch nahi hoga, thik hai?”

In a supermarket, we are at the billing counter. Abbas gets a call, so I start taking out goodies from the shopping cart and placing on the counter. Tammu pops her tongue out and says “Aaaa..” (indication of potty). I look at Abbas and see that he’s busy talking. Mannu gets a panic attack and with a raised voice says “Arre Mamma, usko leke jao jaldi. Nahi to wo pant mein kar degi. Jaldi jaldi” (Meaning – Take her quickly or she’ll do it in her pants. Quick quick)

Mannu has brushed her teeth post dinner and she is after Tammu to get her teeth brushed. Tammu is not paying heed to any of Mannu’s words. Mannu is constantly irritating her by following her wherever she goes holding the toothbrush in hand. Finally, a pissed off Tammu says – “Mannu ne mera dimaag ka dahi banaa diya” and Mannu gives up and says – “Ayyo, Tammu ne mera screw dheela kar diya” (I dunno how to translate this)

In a supermarket whenever Mantam pick some groceries I say “It’s already there at home. Once we run out it, we’ll buy”. If they pick up a doll, I say “We already have Sunny, Johnny, Baby Boy and Baby Girl at home. They will all cry if you take a new toy home”. They obediently put whatever they have picked up back. When I don’t have any such ready-made pretexts for not buying stuff, I say “I don’t have money. Next time you get your piggy banks and buy it”

The mom-daughters trio is returning home on a weekday. We pass by ‘Mini Bazaar’ – small shopping store near our house. Mannu says “Mamma, Mini Bazaar jayenge”. Tammu says – “Arre, Mamma ke paas piase nahi hain. Chodo, ghar jaate hain” (Mamma doesn’t have money. Leave it. Let’s go home”

One day when Abbas was giving them lessons on how they should not pick every other thing while we are shopping. How we slog to earn money and we have to spend wisely and all that. Tammu said “Baba, next time when we go shopping, we’ll take our piggy bank and a knife.” Abbas curiously asked “Why knife?” Tammu said “Arre, piggy bank is locked na? We need a knife to break it”

Both are busy with so many books, crayons and pencils in the drawing-room. I was in the kitchen and eavesdropped to hear their conversation in broken English.

Tammu: “Mannu, I am teacher. Call me Ma’am”
Mannu: “Tammu, I what write?” (Showing her book to Tammu)
Tammu: “Call me Ma’am” (roars)
Mannu: “Okay Ma’am. I write finish”
Tammu: pointing towards the book “Aiyo? What is this? Give me book. Wait I show. You see.”
Proceeds to show Mannu how to write.
Mannu obediently nods and starts writing.
Tammu sets her hair right using her hands. Takes her purse and says “Mannu, I going to Big Bazaar. You write okay?”
Mannu: “No, Wait Taa. I also come”
Tammu: “Ok Mannu. I waiting”
Mannu is quickly wrapping her books and putting the pencils and crayons back into their boxes. Tammu has already got up.
Mannu: “Wait for me Taaa.”
Tammu: “I waiting no?”
Then both go hop on the same cycle and say bye to me…

Another instance where they are writing / colouring books. Both want the same book at the same time. Before I could interfere, I heard Mannu saying “Taaa… We no fight. We share ok?” and then both wrote on the same book simultaneously.

They seem to be growing up so so fast and are becoming more and more independent… 😐

    1. I guess. But they always fight for the same thing. We have been drilling the ‘Share’ mantra into their heads since years and this was the first time they chanted it on their own.

  4. Why don’t you wear Baba’s jeans, Seema!?? 😀

Knife and piggy bank – What imagination and presence of mind!

‘I heard Mannu saying “Taaa… We no fight. We share ok?’ – That is so sweet! And I am wondering when Keer and Kau will graduate to that level.
