Mantam-isms before I forget them

09 Apr

We were at a Hospital for Ma’s routine checkup waiting in the lounge for our turn. Tammu observed all the people in the lounge. She started imitating an old lady and how she was munching on some food with her toothless mouth. After a while, another old lady’s name was called out and she walked in, her body was slightly bent due to old age and hands were tugged backwards. Immediately Tammu started walking like her. Ma started giggling and I was embarrassed to death.

Once we got in, the doc pressed his stethoscope against Ma’s chest as part of his job profile. After coming out, Mannu asked us if her Didi’s chest has become big due to coughing and was that what the doc checked?

After coming back from HAL Museum, next morning Abbas talks to his daughters:

Abbas: Mannu, I want you to become a pilot.
Tammu: What about me Baba?
Abbas: You must become a sportsman errr… sports woman
Tammu: What? A postman?
Abbas: Arey no… a sports person, you will jump, do gymnastics, run, etc etc
Mannu: Me Baba?
Abbas: You can become a doc also Mannu
Tammu: Ok, then I will become a Nurse…

I was baking cinnamon rolls for dinner last night. Mannu came in to help when I was preparing the glaze. She offered to  help, so I dumped all the ingredients in a bowl and asked her to whisk them. After a while I checked that the mixture had not blended well together. So I took the bowl form her and showed her how she is supposed to do it – ‘See Mannu, If you stir this way, it will get mixed properly’. Pat comes the reply – ‘Haan, wo to big hone ke baad hi mujhe aayega na?’ (I’ll learn it only after I become Big)

Abbas is asking parts of the body to him. They have been learning it since almost 2 years now, so it’s a cakewalk for them now. So he decides to complicate it for them…

Abbas: ‘Show me where is Adam’s apple?’
Tammu points at her bum and says ‘Tammu’s apple’

We went to a birthday party a few weeks back and they had conducted a few games for kids. In one of them, all kids were assembled and a tail was attached to their dress from behind. Once the music began, they had to remove others’ tails and the one with his/her tail intact till the end would be the winner. Mantam were the smallest of the lot and as soon as the music began, a kid adjacent to Tammu removed her tail. Mannu’s tail was untouched for a while, and then I saw that Mannu removed her tail and gave it to a girl who was removing other kids’ tails. Later when I asked Mannu why she removed the tail, she replied – ‘Sab ka tail le rahe the. Amar tail keu liyechi na, isiliye amar de diya’ (They were taking everybody else’s tail but not mine. That’s why I gave it)

Tammu’s favorite place at home is the wash basin which has a mirror on top of it. She can spend hours together admiring her beauty, combing her hair, washing her hands and face. On days that we are at home, we end up changing her clothes atleast thrice. One of these days, when I had put on bangles on their hands and carelessly kept them on the dining table. She wore both her and Mannu’s set of bangles on both wrists, caught hold of one of my dupattas, came to me looking for a clip (I was busy cooking), went into the bedroom, emerged after a while with dupatta covering her head and it being carefully tucked behind her back with a clip, the dupatta    was a make-do long plait and she was doing all nautanki of bringing her false plait to the front and then tossing it back, swaying her hips and all that. I was stunned as I wondered how she got the piece of cloth tucked behind her head and there comes her sister with a grin from behind.

At night, I lovingly asked while cuddling her – ‘You love to get decked up na?’ She said ‘Yes Mamma. Mera jab shaadi hoga na? Tab ye bangles sab chota ho jayega. Tab mujhe big bangles kharidke dena okay?’ (When I get married, these bangles will become small. You buy me big bangles then okay?) I asked ‘Shaadi matlab kya?’ (What is Shaadi (wedding)) She clarified ‘Mamma aur Baba kiya na, waise.’ I asked again ‘Who will you marry?’ She firmly said that she will marry Mannu

After reading a lot about the World Sparrow day on Mar 20th, I decided to hang a bird feeder and sparrow nest in our balcony. Ordered and got both delivered from here. Mantam were very curious to know what contained in the package. I answered their endless questions and we finally installed the nest and feeder, also kept an unused bucket with water. So Mantam said – ‘Bird will come, eat from this (feeder), sleep inside this (nest) and drink water and take bath from this (bucket). Pigeons are hogging on the feed as of now.

Today morning when Mannu and I went to the Balcony to water the plants, we saw pigeon poop all over the place. I said ‘Eeew… See Mannu, pigeon ne potty kiya hai’. She asked ‘Why will pigeon do potty Mamma?’ I said ‘Just like us, pigeon ate food from here and then did potty’. She replied ‘Arey Mamma, To phir pigeon ke liye potty seat bhi leke aana chahiye tha na?’ (You should have got a potty seat for the pigoen na?)

It’s very easy to hang re… The feeder has a handle at the top. You just need a long nail or a sort of hook to hang the feeder in. Aww, so nice to see the birds come for a drink no?

You have a future Miss World in the making! 😛

She clarified ‘Mamma aur Baba kiya na, waise.’
Oh wow… looks like no lack of clarity there!

She replied ‘Arey Mamma, To phir pigeon ke liye potty seat bhi leke aana chahiye tha na?
Very good point… what did u say to that!!

They will complete 4 in June 🙂 Mirror obsession is in her genes Ash, passed on from Ma to Abbas to her 🙄

Yeah, no lack of clarity there. But I wonder where she got wearing bangles during Shaadi from? 😯

I told her that pigeon wouldn’t know that it has to do potty in the potty seat even if we keep it in the balcony just like Mantam didn’t know when they were small. To that she asked ‘Why don’t you teach the pigeon just like you taught us?’ I said ‘But the pigeon is scared of me and runs away whenever I go to the balcony’. Again she asked why the pigeon was scared of me. I said ‘Why are you afraid of the dogs? Coz you think they will harm you, although they might not. Similarly pigeon is scared of us thinking we might harm them’ to which I finally got a pondering ‘Ohh’ and then she was distracted by Tammu.

Oh my god! These two are priceless 🙂 They do come up with the sweetest things!!!

That potty thing – I remember Poohi having the same doubts 🙂 We used to live near a horse pasture, so would find horse dung(?) whenever we went for walks, and she used to complain that they need to make toilets for horses 🙂 Later she figured out by herself that, horse toilets might be too big to make, so we’ll just have to ignore the mess 🙂

Hahaha, Toilets for horses eh? She also learned that it’s better to ignore the mess 😀 She is a sweetheart 😀
