Ambitions of childhood
During dinner tonight, we had a casual conversation and the topic of career aspirations came up. This is how the discussion came about:
Mannu: I am yet to decide what I want to become.
Tammu: But I have decided that I want to be a Sand Art Teacher.
Me: Hmmm. Good
Mannu: I think I will become a shopkeeper.
Abbas: Don’t you remember what Baba wants you to become??
Me: (Shushing and signalling Abbas to convey) Let them nourish their own ambitions.
Tammu: Or else I might become a scientist also.
Me: Okay great!
Mannu: May be I will become a shoe seller. I will have a variety of shoes on my cart.
Me: Wow. That’s a good idea.
Abbas: (Facepalm)
Tammu: But Baba wanted you to be an astronaut na?
Mannu: Errr, mmmm, okay now I know. I want to be a security guard. I will deliver the parcels to all people’s houses.
Tammu: Then you become a postman. Why security guard?
Mannu: Ya right. Postman it is then!
Tammu: Okay, I will be astronaut since you are not interested.
Abbas: Great Tammu. You can certainly be an astronaut. You can go to different planets, space etc..
Mannu: I have finally decided that I want to be a fancy store keeper.
Abbas: Banging his forehead on the wall!!!
Me: You know what I wanted to be when I was young?
Mantam: What? What?
Me: Bus Conductor!!

Ambitions of adulthood
There are a few things that I was not good at when I was small. Dancing and Sports! I was indirectly mocked on many occasions for the lack of these skills. They always haunted me. In some corner of my head, I always had the ambition of winning these demons even when I grew up. This instance helped me win over the Dance demon to a certain extent. But even after that, I have had inhibitions to dance in public. A couple of months ago, there was a DJ party hosted by the employer. Last year I had avoided it. This time, however, I decided to go on a whim. I had my colleague S who is a dancer. So I even went on to the dance floor with her and some other colleagues. Looking at the rest of the folks, I got some confidence. Coz nobody was bothered about the steps. Everybody was dancing for joy. I shed my shyness and began blankly aping S. Boy, did I enjoy myself or what? I can’t express how elated I was to have danced in public.
Next demon to capture was Sports. I badly wanted to run a marathon ever since I read RM’s first Mumbai Marathon post. But I never had the guts to go for it as I was always a bad runner. Thinking of the lack of fitness, I dared not make myself a laughing stock. I feared that I might as well be the last participant huffing, puffing, panting and in the worst case crawling to the finish line. Yesterday I saw someone posted about the Pinkathon that is going to be held in Bangalore. I checked the details and I got myself registered for the 3K (the least distance) run. I dunno how I am going to do, but I sure want to participate. Not for anyone, just for myself.
RM, please share some tips and send some virtual blessings!!
All ya Bangalore bloggers, would any of you like to join me?
It’s such a liberating feel when we are able to break free from our fears…good luck
