Clueless about the title

26 Apr

Writing here after a long time. As usual, I am brimming with updates. But this time, I am here to record a huge event for posterity’s sake. Last year during this time, we were packing stuff and preparing ourselves to move to this apartment and Mantam’s new school. This year, also we are doing similar stuff but this time, the move is huge. We are moving base to a different country altogether!!!

Remember I had told about a decision we took some time back and that I would disclose on the blog once we are through with the process? If you ask me why do we want to leave India? I do not have any answer. We love this place that we call home as much as any other Indian worth his salt. But a few things compelled us to explore options and take the plunge. Somewhere around September 2013, we took the decision and began working towards getting the PR. Our friends A & S had migrated in April and they guided us through the entire process. They had had a bitter experience with their agent/consultant who had also charged a bomb. So, they advised us not to go for one. With their assistance and our own research, we set off…

As I was into technical stuff and also came within the age bracket which attracted more points, I became the primary applicant. We had to get a skill assessment done, which took 3 months to process. In the meantime, I attempted the IELTS test. I needed to get 7 out of 9 in each of the 4 modules. Unfortunately, I got 6.5 in the Writing module but higher than 7 in the rest. I was confident that I had done well, so we applied for revaluation. We were told that it would take 2 months for the revaluation results to come. To be on the safer side and not to waste any time on hand, we booked another test slot. To our surprise, both the 2nd attempt and revaluation results came together and I had cleared in both 😀

After the pre-requisites were in place, we submitted Expression of Interest and got an invitation to apply for the visa. Then came the mammoth task of sifting through numerous documents, sorting and scanning them, filling various forms and uploading them. Getting the Police clearance certificate, medical clearance for all of us. Abbas and I would sit post dinner everyday and work till late nights. As we were doing everything on our own, we had to do a lot of research to answer our doubts/queries. We were expecting to get the visa approval anytime in Feb or thereafter. It could get delayed as well. Now what we were concerned about is that we had to pay Mantam’s school fees for the next academic year by April which is a huge amount. If we would get the visa after that, the money would go into the drain. If we don’t get them admitted thinking that we will get the approval sooner or later, the schools here might re-open and we would have to keep Mantam at home while their friends would go to school. We could never think of doing that!!! Anyway, we were worked up for no reason. The approval came on Feb 20th. We couldn’t believe that we finally got it after 6 months of slogging day and night.

Another important question surrounding this move was that how would the transition happen? Abbas told me to go first, look for a job, house etc and then he would come along Mantam and I told him the same. Neither of us wanted to leave Mantam. Any which way, the one who was to stay beyond would have a hard time to cope up alone. Finally, we decided that we would all go together. Even though it would be the most challenging prospect of all, we would be in it as a family and fight it out. So, Abbas and I resigned our respective jobs. We did try our best to apply for jobs from here but did not receive any response. Our friends A & S told us that we would easily get jobs once we land there. So, fingers crossed!!

Yesterday was our last day at work. We are leaving Bangalore on 29th and travelling to Kolkata. Will be flying from Kolkata on May 10th. I have so much more to say, about our feelings and emotions and reactions of family, acquaintances etc… Will write in the subsequent posts.

Thanks to all of you who are still around, and many of you who keep checking on us via emails or pings. I love my blog readers. You all are the best!!!

By the way… you must be guessing where we are headed to eh?? We are migrating to Australia!!! Will need all your prayers and best wishes to sail us through. Thank you.

I had scored 6.5 but after revaluation, it came up to 7. Have you attempted IELTS?
