Stereotypes galore!!

23 May

Hello folks,

We reached Sydney safely and slowly settling down, one step at a time. I will come up with a detailed account on that. But before that, I wanted to note down reactions of people who learnt about our move here while in India.

As soon as I would say that we are moving to Australia, the first question I would be asked is “Oh, so your husband got a job there?” I mean why on earth don’t they ask if both of us or which one of us got a job when they clearly know that both of us work. When I say that my husband hasn’t got a job in Australia, they would say “Oh, then his employer must be sending him for onsite assignment eh?” What the hell? I too have an employer who could have sent me on an onsite assignment. Why is it taken for granted that the wife follows the husband in his career moves? There were a few who even dived into conclusion about our circumstances and asked “So, when are you joining him with the kids?” Grrrr

I was shell shocked when some of the people who fell in this category were also working women! Sigh 😦

Good to hear from you Seema. How are ManTam doing ? Yes do write when you get time. Eager to read abt them.

On the stereotype well India is still far behind, this mentality will not change so easily. I do t know if India can accept the stay at home dad concept like in here.

Don’t feel disheartened. They were probably thinking along the lines of what happens in most cases when families settle abroad.

Thanks Kaj! Perhaps, you are right but I don’t understand why they simply don’t ask straight forward?
