The Movement Saga | Wrapping Up

Wrapping up a household replete with a million things seemed like a herculean task. But to my fortune, the project that I was working on ended in Feb. So I was moved to the ‘bench’ while serving my notice period. This meant that the resource management group couldn’t propose my profile for any internal requirements. I made best use of this opportunity to spend this time at home. I would just visit office once in a week to meet colleagues and exhibit my existence. I had two months in hand and it was ample time to get all the packing done at a relaxed snail’s pace but I chose to chillax. With R still working with us, she would do the household work and I utilized the time to workout, indulge in afternoon naps, spend quality time with Mantam and basically lead a luxurious life. Abbas would leave for office in the morning and give me a couple of tasks to do but I never had the ‘time’ as I would be busy all day. (Don’t ask me doing what) I had become absolutely lazy during those days. Not to forget I even went to watch a movie (Queen) alone in the theatre while Mantam were at school. I was in a fix whether I must share this with them as I didn’t know they would understand. But compelled by habit, I couldn’t contain my excitement and told them. To my surprise, one of them asked me to enjoy myself and the other one said that she would want to hear the movie’s story in the evening, which I promptly did.

During the last couple of weeks, I slowly started sorting things and realized what a humungous task that was as there were so many different categories under which all things had to be put. The premise was that we were shipping two carton boxes full of stuff via air cargo directly to Australia which would reach there 10 days after our arrival. We were also sending our cot, bed and Aquaguard to Kolkata for Ma via packers and movers and also planning to send extra utensils and other stuff that we might not be able to take immediately but might want to keep it there and take later. Also stuff that we wouldn’t need but they could be of use to Ma.

• Air cargo stuff which would have things that we would not need immediately after landing but once we settle in a proper home.
• Things that we would carry with us to Australia which would be needed on a day to day basis there like warm clothes as we would land in peak winter and a few formal clothes and basic utensils etc.
• Things which we would need in Kolkata for the 10 days that we would stay there as it would be peak summer there during our stay
• We were going to send Kaalu (our TV) to Gurgaon to my BIL’s place. So, I was packing some toys, clothes, my baking accessories to go along with it.
• Also had to sort Mantam’s priced possessions like books, toys, stationeries, bangles which they outgrew among friends depending on their kids’ age.
• Things that we need to send to Ma to Kolkata via packers and movers. This one had two sub categories. Ma had strictly warned to separately pack things in such a way that those that are of no use to her must be well packed so that it can be kept aside unopened.
• Our tickets to Kolkata were booked in such a way that we would be staying in Bangalore for 5 days after the movers and packers would do their job. This was deliberately done so that we have enough window to unpack stuff at Kolkata and help Ma in unpacking and arranging. So, we had to also leave aside things that we would need for those 5 days!!!

So you get the drift right? Simply put, I went CRAZY!

As things started getting sold or given away one after the other, realization kept on dawning to shake us, pinch us and shudder us to say that it’s all for real. It was very painful to see those material things which made our house, our home falling apart. It was like someone sucking your existence out of you while you just stand and stare. Well, there was no someone there but just the repercussions of your decision. We only consoled ourselves thinking that whatever happens, happens for good.

  3. I just did all that u mentioned n I agree moving is so hard. Eventhough I am hardly attached to stuff, it was heartbreaking to part with kids’ clothes n toys. N walking around an empty home. It is as if you never lived there at all. It takes years to build a home, one piece of furniture, one loving memory at a time, but a move just wipes an existence in a few weeks. Thank god the memories remain. In blogs too, in our case. 🙂
